Canada Closes its Fast Track SDS Visa Program:
Canada has recently announced that from 8th November 2024, it is closing its fast-track Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa program, which had previously allowed faster processing times for students from select countries. This significant change may affect many international students hoping to study in Canada. IIE Education is here to help you navigate the new requirements. Our team of experts will provide tailored guidance on applying for non-SDS study permits and other options to ensure that your Canadian study plans remain on track.

Why Study in Canada?

Studying in Canada presents a wealth of opportunities for international students, establishing it as a premier destination for those in pursuit of a superior education within a nurturing, inclusive, and diverse setting. Canada’s commitment to academic excellence, combined with its cultural richness, creates an educational landscape that is not only intellectually stimulating but also personally enriching. Below are expanded insights into the myriad of advantages that make Canada an attractive option for higher education.

canada

Updated GIC

One of the major highlights in the recent set of announcements pertains to the revised financial requirements for international students applying for a study permit in Canada. Previously, applicants were mandated to demonstrate access to a minimum savings amount, set at C$10,000, along with additional costs for travel and one year of tuition. However, due to escalating living expenses, this figure has proven insufficient for practical planning.

Moving forward, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will adjust this financial requirement annually, aligning it with the latest low-income cut-off reported by Statistics Canada. As of 2024, a solitary applicant must exhibit access to C$20,635, in addition to covering travel expenses and the full first-year tuition cost. This heightened minimum amount will be applicable to all new study permit applications starting January 1, 2024. The adjustment also extends to applicants utilizing Canada’s Student Direct Stream, where the proof of financial support, typically provided through a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), must now meet the elevated minimum of C$20,635 instead of the previous C$10,000.

New Cap Rules for International Students

In order to address the rapid expansion of the international student population, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will implement a temporary limit on the issuance of study permits. For the year 2024, this cap is anticipated to result in approximately 360,000 approved study permits, representing a 35% reduction from the figures recorded in 2023.

To manage the unsustainable growth of international students in specific provinces, the IRCC will introduce caps for each province and territory, proportionate to their population. As of March 31, 2024, every study permit application will necessitate an attestation letter from the respective province or territory, ensuring that students receive the essential support for their academic success.

Commencing September 2024, international students enrolling in study programs covered by a curriculum licensing agreement will no longer qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). However, graduates from master’s and other short graduate-level programs will become eligible to apply for a 3-year work permit, extending their opportunity to gain valuable work experience in Canada.

In a shift to open work permits for spouses of international students, only those whose partners are enrolled in master’s and doctoral programs will be eligible. This implies that spouses of international students pursuing other levels of study, such as undergraduate or college programs, will no longer qualify for a spousal open work permit.
